One of my goals for 2009, let’s call it an early new year’s resolution, is to start an art collection.
This post will be the first installment of many as I share thoughts and tips related to purchasing and collecting art that I gather while researching. Ultimately, I’d like to create a great go-to resource for purchasing artwork with a focus on art collecting in Calgary.
1. Purchase what you love
Art should first and foremost be about personal enjoyment; of self-expression. Forget the fads, forget what your friends have purchased, and focus on the art that moves you most. At the end of the day, if you don’t have to have a particular piece of art, you probably shouldn’t be purchasing it.
2. Do your homework
If you’re like me, you have a limited budget with which to work when you’re in the market for art. A higher price doesn’t always equate to a better piece of art and certainly shouldn’t affect the amount of joy a painting or sculpture gives you.
Read books on art, visit as many galleries and shows as you can, and learn about the different price points and how materials and media affect the price of art. With this information, you’ll have a better idea of what pieces you can reasonably expect (read: afford) to add to your collection.
3. Be patient
Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither should your collection! As you do your research, keep a list of your favourite artists. From there it’s about waiting and staying in touch with your local art community to ensure you’re aware of new exhibits. It can be well worth the wait!
To quote W.M. Hunt of the Hasted Hunt Gallery: “commit, commit, commit! Look at the hair on the back of your hands, listen to your heart, figure out if you can afford it, and then commit!”
