With all this talk about the holiday season, I got to thinking about the new year and ideas for New Year’s resolutions. For those of you who don’t want to procrastinate (my 2008 resolution; not going so well), I’ve created a list of potential New Year’s resolution ideas that are art-related:
Enroll in an art class
There are a ton of art classes available in Calgary, everything from small classrooms, to one-on-one lessons, to structured courses as offered at the Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD). Learn how to draw, or create beautiful pieces of jewelry, or maybe even try your hand at sculpting. ACAD in particular has a great selection of credit and non-credit art courses available. Check back soon for a more comprehensive list of art classes in Calgary.
Update: Check out the list of art classes available in Calgary from the permanent links to the top right. It’s a work in progress, but it has a nice diversity – from hobby to for-credit, from children to youth to adult.
Visit art galleries
Public or private, visiting art galleries is an inexpensive way to incorporate art into your life. The Art Gallery of Calgary currently has a number of great exhibitions and always has new artists and collections arriving. Resolve to visit an art gallery once every couple months and I’m sure you’ll be glad you did!
Create something of your own
If time or money is stopping you from enrolling in an art class, don’t forget that all you need is a pen and some paper and you’re ready to create a masterpiece! Set aside a bit of time each day to sketch or write some poetry. Visual or not, creativity is never a waste of time. Check out some of the art supply stores in Calgary if you need some help, inspiration, or art materials.
Buy some art
For those of us with no time, but do have the means, buying art can be just as fulfilling as creating it. Not only do you add more beauty to your day, you can feel good about supporting your local artists and art galleries.

Take a photo of something that fascinates you
Hi Dave,
That’s a fantastic idea for a resolution. I can remember times just a couple weeks ago where the trees were encased in white – absolutely spectacular. I wish I had a camera!
Let’s keep these ideas for new year’s resolutions coming!
