Bratsa Bonifacho at the Herringer Kiss Gallery

A new exhibit at the Herringer Kiss Gallery opened this past weekend. Bratsa Bonifacho’s new series of works and first exhibition in Calgary is inspired by the predator of the digital age: computer viruses.

Bonifacho’s oil paintings look to mimic the way computer viruses and worms affect our technology by creating scrambled works of letters and messages. Through it, he has managed to create works of art that embody the chaos left by the viruses.

What I think is fantastic about this new exhibit is its ability to bring our modern digital world into the realm of oil paintings. Most of us have experienced the frustration of computer viruses in our own lives and to see that through art is a comforting experience: “Ah… I am not the only one” or “Thank goodness this isn’t my computer right now.”

Bonifacho on the intentions of his art practice:

I communicate and express essentially non-verbal thoughts and emotions abstractly, within the discipline of formalism – through colour and shape, gesture and surface.

The source of my art is the comprehension and channelling of strong emotions stemming from observation, current events or epiphanic memory: thoughts of environmental devastation; or blatant injustice; or peak moments of optimism and ecstacy. I see subjective awareness as the fuel of creative fire, and for a sustained body of work the emotive energy must be profound.

Bratsa Bonifacho is an internationally recognized Canadian artist who has studied in Belgrade, Rome, and Frankfurt. His work has been exhibited all around the world and he has since settled down in Vancouver, British Columbia.
