The American Heritage Dictionary describes “Minimalism” as:

A school of abstract painting and sculpture that emphasizes extreme simplification of form, as by the use of basic shapes and monochromatic palettes of primary colours, objectivity, and anonymity of style.

In the Triangle Gallery of Visual Art’s newest exhibition, Neo-Minimalism, curator Harry Kiyooka brought together nine Western Canadian artists whose works are pushing the boundaries of what was minimal art through contemporary aesthetic.

From the Triangle Gallery website on their current exhibition:

Some of the works in the exhibition engage contemporary media such as photography, while other artworks have been created with sophisticated tools including CAD programs and laser cutters. This impressive roster of works ranges from abstraction to figuration and from painting to sculpture.

This exhibition looks like a fantastic way to broaden your artistic palette while taking in art from some of Canada’s leading minimalist artists. As a side note, Tim Zuck was written about in an article I stumbled across recently on Calgary’s Top 12 Art Exhibitions of 2008. His work alone, from the sounds of the review, should be reason enough for everyone to go out and experience this art show.
