Call out for Asian Art Enthusiasts and Volunteers!

Are you interested in Asian cultures and art? Are you interested in where Chinese tradition meets contemporary style? How can a history of discrimination and struggle, prosperity and success effect Albertans — and namely Albertan Artists? How is it that Chinese roots and soil make blossoms? Interested in learning more as an art novice or connoisseur? If you answered, “Yes”, or even a “Maybe” to any of these questions, then feel free to join us!

Hosted by the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre (197 1st Street SW), the RootSoilBlossom Art Exhibition will be bringing together traditional and contemporary Chinese Art will be displaying works from various Albertan artists from different generations. The opening exhibition day will also invite viewers to listen to a “Diaspora Discussion Panel”, with prominent University academics, cultural organizers and artists. They will be taking an in depth look at themes surrounding Asian Heritage: identity, art, gender issues, history and politics, generation gaps/links, future aims in Calgary, and more.

To put on this event, the exhibition needs to provide visitors and viewers alike with a welcoming and comfortable environment, general information about the artists and work, as well as provide security for the exhibition space during its open hours. Therefore this is a call out to all volunteers who would like to donate their energy and time to any of the following:

  • Panel discussion and Art Opening set-up and take down (any time 11am-6:30pm May 29 with FREE LUNCH)
  • Exhibition set-up (May 27 and 28) and take-down (June 8 and 9)
  • Information and security during the exhibition time (9am-9pm May 29-June 7)

This is a great opportunity for you to learn more from contemporary and traditional local Asian artists and for you to meet others who are interested too! As the volunteer curator myself, I am more than happy to support you with the information and help you need to get your volunteer needs done. I will provide you with information to facilitate answers for questions from viewers, about set up and take down as well as provide the tools; moreover, with instructions about securing the exhibition and artworks in the Cultural Centre.

Any enthusiasts with free time are more than welcome to donate their time and energy to the RSB exhibition. If you are interested in volunteering, we will be meeting with a few of the exhibiting artists on Sunday the 17th of May at 7:30pm (with downtown location to be announced).

If you are interested, have comments or questions about the exhibition as an enthusiast and hopefully as a volunteer, please don’t hesitate to contact me!

Hope to welcome you soon!

Best,
