Calgary PechaKucha Night

Just got word of this, so I apologize for the last minute post, but I thought it was just too neat an event not to write about! PechaKucha is an international meetup for all sorts of people, architects, planners, and artists, etc who come together to talk about their work. Tonight’s theme is “How We Live Together” and revolves around how the decisions we make today, affect our cities in the years to follow.

You can learn more about PechaKucha Night from the following press release. Definitely sounds interesting!

Calgary PechaKucha Night

(Calgary, AB) – Calgary’s second PechaKucha Night is {today}, Thursday, December 3rd at 7:30pm at the Uptown Stage and Screen.

Calgary Arts Development’s December PechaKucha Night will revolve around the theme of ”How We Live Together.” Architects, planners, artists and other great minds will explore how cities become livable places and how the decisions we make today affect our future environmental, social and economic landscapes.

Devised and shared by Klein Dytham Architecture in 2003 as a place for designers, developers and architects to meet, network and show their work in public, PechaKucha Nights are now taking place in 261 cities around the world. The format is simple: speakers present 20 slides each, for 20 seconds per slide. PechaKucha is properly pronounced ‘peh-CHAK-cha’ and is Japanese for ‘chatter’ or the sound of conversation.

Tomorrow’s event will be presented by a dynamic list of 12 cultural space creators including Susan Veres, Communications Director, Calgary Municipal Land Corporatio; Gian-Carlo Carra, Senior Urban Designer, T | six; Quinton Rafuse, Partner, CoworkYYC; Xstine Cook, Artistic Director, Calgary Animated Objects Society; and Eric Moschopedis, Interdisciplinary Artist and Creator of Imaginary Ordinary.

Calgary Arts Development has secured the rights to PechaKucha Nights in Calgary and will be hosting four PechaKucha Nights over the course of the year. The events aim to expose Calgarians to the dynamic and international PechaKucha Night format, support and promote creative spacemaking in Calgary and encourage dialogue surrounding cultural infrastructure developments in the city.

PechaKucha night takes place on Thursday, December 3rd at the Uptown Stage and Screen, 612 8 Ave SW. Doors open at 7:00pm and presentations begin at 7:30pm. Admission is $10 at the door or in advance at CalgaryPKN2.Eventbrite.com. This is a licensed event and no minors will be permitted.
